We can benchmark at three levels:
- Against our own past performance (but that tells us nothing about our performance relative to others)
- Against external organisations (but that is unlikely to offer us any sustainable advantage)
- Against a goal or vision (but to be meaningful, we have to understand what is 'normal')
Benchmarks matter – because they offer us data to drive improvement and to respond to demands about the value of our contribution and performance.
