Convict Transportation to New South Wales, 1787–1849: Mortality Rates Reconsidered

This paper reassesses the factors that had an impact on convict mortality rates for ships sailing to Sydney from the First Fleet in 1787 until the end of transportation to NSW in 1849.

It differs from past studies by also analysing mortality in the period to 1800 using a wider range of variables that give more detail about the way transportation was commissioned, including contract monitoring, inspections, and financial incentives.
